Why this matters
Updates fix security weaknesses that attackers actively exploit. Delaying them is one of the most common reasons computers are compromised. Keeping Windows updated is quick and mostly automatic once set up.
What you'll need
- Your Windows computer
- An internet connection
- Power connected for laptops
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1
Open Windows Update
Go to Settings, then Windows Update (Windows 11). On Windows 10, go to Settings, Update & Security, Windows Update.
Step 2
Check for updates
Select "Check for updates" and then "Download & install" for anything available.
Step 3
Restart when prompted
Most updates only take effect after a restart. Save your work and select "Restart now", or schedule a restart outside business hours.
Step 4
Set active hours
Under Advanced options, set Active hours so Windows does not restart while you are working.
Step 5
Turn on "Get the latest updates as soon as they are available"
On Windows 11, this toggle on the Windows Update page gets non-security improvements sooner. Security updates install automatically either way.
Step 6
Update other Microsoft products
Under Advanced options, enable "Receive updates for other Microsoft products" so Office and other apps are patched too.
Troubleshooting
An update keeps failing
Go to Settings, System, Troubleshoot, Other troubleshooters and run the Windows Update troubleshooter. Check you have enough free disk space and restart before trying again.
Summary
With automatic updates and sensible active hours, Windows stays patched with minimal disruption.
