Why this matters
Your computer holds your photos, documents and saved logins. Modern Windows and macOS include strong security built in; you just need to make sure it is turned on and kept up to date.
What you'll need
- Your Windows or Mac computer
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1
Turn on automatic updates
Windows: Settings, Windows Update. Mac: System Settings, General, Software Update, Automatic updates.
Step 2
Check antivirus is active
On Windows, open Windows Security and make sure Virus & threat protection shows green ticks. Microsoft Defender is free and effective for most home users.
Step 3
Use a standard account for everyday use
Create a separate standard user account for daily use and keep the admin account for installing software. This limits what malware can do.
Step 4
Lock the screen
Set a PIN or password and have the screen lock after a few minutes of inactivity.
Step 5
Only install trusted software
Download apps from the Microsoft Store, Mac App Store or the official developer website. Avoid "free" versions of paid software.
Step 6
Turn on device encryption
Windows: Settings, Privacy & security, Device encryption (or BitLocker). Mac: System Settings, Privacy & Security, FileVault.
Summary
Automatic updates, active antivirus, a screen lock and encryption give your home computer strong protection with little ongoing effort.
