Why this matters
Printers are a classic source of IT frustration. Most problems come down to a connection issue, a stuck print job or a driver problem, all of which you can usually fix yourself.
What you'll need
- Access to the printer
- A Windows computer
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1
Check the basics
Make sure the printer is on, has paper and toner/ink, and shows no error on its display.
Step 2
Check the connection
For network printers, confirm the printer is connected to the same network (print a network configuration page from the printer menu). For USB printers, try a different port.
Step 3
Restart the printer and computer
Turn the printer off for 30 seconds, then restart your computer.
Step 4
Clear the print queue
Go to Settings, Bluetooth & devices, Printers & scanners, select the printer and open the print queue. Cancel all documents and try again.
Step 5
Run the printer troubleshooter
Go to Settings, System, Troubleshoot, Other troubleshooters and run "Printer".
Step 6
Remove and re-add the printer
In Printers & scanners, select the printer, choose "Remove", then "Add device". Download the latest driver from the manufacturer’s website if needed.
Summary
Checking connections, clearing the queue and reinstalling the printer fixes most printing problems.
