Why this matters
Reporting spam trains your email filter to catch similar messages and helps your provider block spam for everyone. In Australia, the ACMA also investigates businesses that send spam.
What you'll need
- The spam email
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1
Outlook: report as junk
Select the message, choose "Report" in the toolbar, then "Report junk". Choose "Report phishing" instead if it is trying to steal details.
Step 2
Gmail: report spam
Select the message and click the "Report spam" icon (an exclamation mark in a stop sign).
Step 3
Report to the ACMA
Forward spam from Australian businesses to report@submit.spam.acma.gov.au, or use the ACMA website.
Step 4
Check your Junk folder occasionally
Filters sometimes catch genuine emails. Mark them as "Not junk" so future messages arrive normally.
Summary
A few seconds reporting spam keeps your filter accurate and helps reduce spam across the board.
