Why this matters
Unwanted emails waste time and can hide important messages or scams. Blocking persistent senders keeps your inbox cleaner and reduces the chance of an accidental click.
What you'll need
- Access to your mailbox
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1
Outlook: block a sender
Right-click the email (or select the three dots) and choose "Block" then "Block sender". Future messages go straight to Junk.
Step 2
Outlook: manage blocked senders
In Outlook on the web, go to Settings, Mail, Junk email to add whole domains or remove blocked addresses.
Step 3
Gmail: block a sender
Open the email, select the three dots next to Reply and choose "Block [sender]".
Step 4
Unsubscribe from legitimate newsletters
For genuine marketing emails, use the "Unsubscribe" link offered by Outlook or Gmail at the top of the message. Australian businesses must honour unsubscribe requests under the Spam Act.
Step 5
Do not unsubscribe from obvious scams
For suspicious emails, report them as phishing or junk instead. Clicking "unsubscribe" in a scam confirms your address is active.
Summary
Block persistent senders, unsubscribe from legitimate lists and report suspicious messages to keep your inbox manageable.
